Can Arsenal still win the Premier League title?

Arsenal have competed for the Premier League title in the last three seasons, but it seems they will have to settle for the second spot again.

  • They have 62 points after 31 games, while leaders Liverpool have 73 with a game in hand. The Gunners can get a maximum of 84 points, therefore, Liverpool needs 11 to seal the title.

    The Reds are only fighting for the league, so they will try to seal the title as soon as possible. The two sides also face each other at Anfield in May, so the Gunners could give Liverpool a guard of honour.

    Has VAR impacted Arsenal's title run?

    The VAR has been a weekly topic for many league fans. Arsenal fans have constantly criticised the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for refereeing in England.

    The Gunners have received five red cards this season, the most in the league this season.

    Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card against Wolves in January caused an uproar in the football world, but it was later overturned. Referee Michael Oliver was threatened and abused, resulting in a police investigation.

    Arsenal have also conceded contentious penalties, including on Saturday against Everton, which saw them draw the game 1-1. After that game, some fans concluded that their season was sabotaged.

    Was Arsenal's season derailed by referees?

    @ZTlowkey:

    "Brighton (H), Man City (A), Brighton (A), Everton (A).These four games where we’ve had wins stripped away from us due to abhorrent decisions by the officials, and I’m meant to just stomach it and move on. The sooner these refs get binned the better the product."

    @totalafczone:

    "In the first game of the season, Havertz was choke slammed & VAR didn’t look at it. The signs were there but we chose to ignore them."

    @footalyse:

    "I feel like I’ve seen that exact game play out a dozen times this season. Take the lead, defend comfortably, bizarre refereeing call alters the scoreline, points shared."

    @1886_blog:

    "That game summarised Arsenal’s season. Completely comfortable and in control until an incorrect PGMOL decision proved costly. Well done boys, good process."

    @nonewthing:

    "Liverpool have an asterisk on their title. There is a clear sabotage against Arsenal in this league."

    Why Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off

    TUKO.co.ke earlier reported on why Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off in Arsenal's defeat to West Ham.

    The teenager brought down Mohammed Kudus and was sent off after a VAR check. The Premier League said the defender denied the Ghanain an obvious goalscoring chance.
