What led to the Kahawa West building collapse

In Nairobi county, there was a tense moment after an apartment collapsed in Kahawa West.

Kenya Redcross issued a statement indicating that several people could have been trapped under the rubble.

Residents had detected the weakness in the building and had mobilised people to evacuate moments before it collapsed.

Residents reported that the National Construction Authority (NCA) had deemed the building unsafe and advised evacuation.

Detecting structural weaknesses, residents mobilized an evacuation just before the building collapsed.

What NCA said about the building that collapsed in Homa Bay

Meanwhile, the NCA defended itself after a seven-story building collapsed in Rongo, Homa Bay county, in December 2024.

In a statement to newsrooms, the NCA explained that the collapsed building had been suspended because of structural integrity issues.

NCA Executive Director Maurice Akech stated that at the time of the collapse, the project had been suspended following a routine quality assurance check.

Akech said the authority’s compliance will investigate to establish the cause of the collapse.

The Kenya Redcross said several people who had been trapped under the debris made distress call

Rongo OCPD Salim Fundi confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain calm as the rescue mission continued.

The police boss indicated that those trapped inside were mainly construction workers on duty, adding that investigations into the tragedy had begun.
