Celebrated human rights lawyer and Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has died leaving many Kenyans and the legal fraternity in shock.

LSK President confirms Pheroze Nowrojee's death
The Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo confirmed Nowrojee's passing, referring to him as a man of honourable character.

In her statement, Faith noted how class act was Nowrojee who had so much talent that cut across different fields.

"A teacher, a mentor, human and constitutional lawyer, poet, writer, and an unwavering defender of justice. SC Nowrojee leaves behind a legacy etched in the soul of our nation and the conscience of our legal profession. Of all the great men and women that we grew up hearing of, drawing inspiration from, and looking forward to working with, SC Nowrojee was the ultimate colossus of legal practice," read part of her statement.
Who is Pheroze Nowrojee?
Nowrojee was known for his strong stance in defending the constitution and the rights which saw him clash with different administrations.
From bios shared online about him, Nowrojee became an advocate in 1965, and at a young age, he accompanied his father AR Kapila to courtrooms to follow proceedings, and the love of law grew in his young heart.
One of the cases which shaped his life as he followed his dad to court was the Mau Mau Lari massacre trials in Githunguri in 1953. His father was the defence attorney.
He went to Catholic Parochial Primary School in Nairobi before joining Billimorja High School in Panchgani, Maharashtra, India.

He later studied at Bombay University, Dar-es-Salaam before he joined Yale Law School in the United States.
The renowned Senior Counsel was also part of the 42-member team that represented veteran politician Raila Odinga's petition at the Supreme Court where he contested the 2022 General Election presidential results.
More tributes in Nowrojee's honour
His fellow lawyers, led by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo mourned his demise via their different social media platforms.
Otiende wrote:
"Quite saddened to learn that my senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has passed on! A quintessential advocate who presented the best in court advocacy. Rest in power, Senior!"
Veteran lawyer and former Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara also paid tribute, saying:
“I know all of you will be as shocked as I am to learn that our friend, our mentor and a great patriot Pheroze Nowrojee has passed on a few hours ago. What a loss to the legal profession and to this country. As we mourn his death, let us also celebrate an exemplary life well lived.”

Judy Thongori dies
In a different report, the legal fraternity was earlier in the year thrown into mourning following advocate and activist Judy Thongori's death.
Thongori had been flown to India for emergency care but she succumbed while undergoing treatment.
During her tenure, the bold advocate challenged women to embrace their family identities when seeking jobs.
